Today I've decided to embark on a new project: learning English idioms in a systematic way. I intend to add a new idiom to my vocabulary on an alphabetical basis every day and share it with my readers. I'm going to provide the most comprehensive coverage of each item by collating the available entries from a variety of sources (mostly dictionaries) and throwing in my own experience as a Russian-to-English translator.
English texts are usually more idiomatic than Russian texts; this means, i.a., that they use more specific words where a Russian text would have abstract terms, and feature more idioms so that translators sometimes have to insert idioms as translations of generic terms such as успех, неудача и т.п.

This idiom can be used to translate all kinds of wording centred on the notion of advantage (преимущество), such as решающий аргумент, сила, приоритет, выгода, предпочтение, привилегия, шансы, вес, перевес.
